Process for Project Funding

Quick Facts
- TA funds are available through the Federal Highway Administration
- TA funds are administered by the Hawaii DOT and the OahuMPO
- TA program must be competitive
- TA program is a reimbursement program -- you must spend your own funds and then request reimbursement through the DOT
- TA program is an 80/20 program: applicants must provide a 20% local match; 80% is Federal

- Local governments (e.g., counties)
- Non-profits
- Regional transportation agencies
- Transit agencies
- Natural resource and public lands agency
- Schools and School Districts
Eligible Activities
Planning, design, and construction
- Sidewalks, paths, bike lanes, protected bike lanes, etc.
- Pedestrian and bicycle signals
- Traffic calming techniques
- Lighting
- ADA Compliance
- Other pedestrian/bicycle safety-related infrastructure
- Conversion of railroad corridors for trails/greenways/paths
- Construction of turnouts, overlooks, viewing areas
- Historic preservation and rehabilitation of historic transportation facilities
- Vegetation management practices within transportation ROW's to improve safety, prevent invasive species, and provide erosion control
- Archaeological activities relating to impacts from implementation of transportation project
- Environmental mitigation activity, including pollution prevention, pollution abatement, stormwater management
Available Funding
Each year, approximately $2,680,000 of federal funds (DOT + OahuMPO) are available in this program.
The Hawaii DOT has approximately $1.8 million available in any given year for applicants. Additional funds may be available from previous fiscal years.
